What to Wear on Your First Run

Last updated: March 2026

Runner on an outdoor trail

Running gear advice tends toward the obsessive. You do not need compression tights, a GPS watch, or a hydration vest for your first few miles. You need shoes that fit and clothing that does not chafe.

The one rule that actually matters

No cotton. Cotton absorbs sweat and holds it against your skin. After ten minutes of running it becomes heavy, cold, and abrasive. Any synthetic moisture-wicking fabric solves this completely. You do not need to spend a lot. A basic Nike Dri-FIT or Under Armour HeatGear top costs $25 and lasts years.

Shoes

This is where it is worth spending money. The right shoe for your foot type prevents shin splints, knee pain, and plantar fasciitis that end running habits before they start. Go to a specialty running store for your first pair. Fleet Feet and Road Runner Sports offer free gait analysis and will fit you properly. This matters more than any other gear decision you will make as a beginner.

Socks

Running socks are not the same as regular athletic socks. Moisture-wicking synthetic or merino wool socks prevent blisters by moving sweat away from your skin. A pair of Balega or Darn Tough running socks costs $15 to $24 and makes a noticeable difference from the first run. Buy at least two pairs.

Everything else

Running shorts or tights in any synthetic fabric. A light jacket for colder weather that you can tie around your waist. Sunglasses if you run outdoors in daylight. A simple armband or running belt for your phone and keys. None of this needs to be expensive or from a running-specific brand. The shoes and socks are the only places where quality directly affects how your body feels.

Most people overthink gear before their first run and underthink consistency after it. Show up in synthetic fabric and proper shoes, and go from there.
