Pickleball Starter Kit: What Beginners Actually Need

Paddle, shoes with lateral support, and the right balls for your surface. Everything you need before your first game.

1

Paddle

The paddle is the single most important purchase you will make as a beginner. Weight and grip size affect control more than anything else. Go with a midweight paddle (7.5 to 8.2oz) in graphite or carbon fiber face, not wood. Wood paddles are sold as "beginner" options but the dead feel actively slows down your development.

Balls

Indoor and outdoor pickleball are played with different balls. Indoor balls have larger holes and are softer, designed for smooth gym floors. Outdoor balls have smaller holes, are harder, and withstand wind and rough court surfaces. Using the wrong ball makes the game significantly harder than it needs to be. The Franklin X-40 is the standard outdoor ball used in tournaments and at most recreational courts outdoors.

Court Shoes

Do not play pickleball in running shoes. Running shoes are built for forward motion and have thick cushioning that reduces court feel. Pickleball requires constant lateral movement, side-to-side cuts and quick direction changes. Court shoes have a flatter, more grippy sole and reinforced lateral support that prevents ankle rolls. This is the second most important purchase after the paddle.

Bag

A standard gym bag works, but a paddle bag is worth it because of one thing: the paddle sleeve. Paddles get damaged when they knock around loose against water bottles and shoes. A bag with a dedicated paddle pocket protects the face and keeps the grip clean. You also want enough room for extra balls and a change of clothes.

Eyewear

Optional for beginners. Becomes important when playing outdoors in bright sun or in competitive settings where a ball to the face is a real risk.

A pickleball travels at 25 to 40 mph and will hit you in the face. It is a question of when, not if. Standard sunglasses shatter on impact and can cause more damage than the ball itself. Sport-specific eyewear uses polycarbonate lenses rated for impact. If you play indoors, clear lenses. If you play outdoors, tinted. The Oakley Flak 2.0 XL is overkill for casual beginners, but if you play outdoors regularly, it is the right call.
